Algorithmic bias and diversity in the tech industry with Anne-Marie Imafidon

The Telegraph's Ellie Zolfagharifard spoke with Dr Anne-Marie Imafidon, CEO of Stemettes, a social enterprise encouraging girls aged 5–22 to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. At 11, she was also the youngest woman ever to pass an A-Level in computing.

She addresses algorithmic bias and diversity in the tech industry. Algorithmic bias describes systematic errors in a computer system that create unfair outcomes, such as privileging one arbitrary group of users over others.

Imafidon states that algorithmic bias means job adverts for tech roles posted on social media platforms are not being shown to women or the average salary women are seeing is lower than the salary advertised to men.

“The next generation of technologists are going to take this more seriously and if present employers aren't going to take this seriously, they will outperform you, they'll outrun you, they'll overtake you.”
