Theme of the Week #7 - Rock House Jail (Main Theme from The Rock)

Track Title: Rock House Jail
Movie: The Rock
Composer(s): Hans Zimmer, Harry Gregson-Williams and Nick Glennie-Smith
Theme of the Week: November 17, 2008

Originally Nick Glennie-Smith was suppose to score "The Rock" on his own, but Jerry Bruckheimer expressed some disappointment with the music he was turning in. As a result Hans Zimmer reluctantly stepped in to help. The main theme for "The Rock" is actually written by Zimmer, while the majority of the smaller connecting themes were put together by Glennie-Smith and Harry Gregson-Williams.

Due to the film's length, Nick Glennie-Smith was short on the musical cues needed to complete the film. So while he worked on smaller cues and Hans Zimmer worked on the main theme. Harry Gregson-Williams created several cues to lengthen the movie's score. Although he's uncredited, even James Newton Howard lent a hand to the epic sound.

However, the main theme, as heard above, is Hans Zimmer's work threaded together by the other composers' musical cues. Although the theme has been known to represent the movie as a whole, it was originally written as the motif for the villain of the film. (Played by Ed Harris.)

"The Rock" is widely praised as one of Zimmer's finest themes, both by fans and critics of action movie scores, but Zimmer has been quoted saying that the CD featuring the film's music "stinks." He would have preferred more of Nick Glennie-Smith's music on the album.
