Theme of the Week #12 - Battle: L.A. Suite

First off, I know I haven't done this in awhile. But I never said it'd happen every week you peons. It's happening now. Moving on.

Hello Brian Tyler. "Who?" Unfortunately, Brian Tyler is a great talent who's been given the most painful movies to score. It really is a shame. But while Dragonball: Evolution, Alien vs. Predator: Requiem and Rambo aren't exactly movies worth sitting through, their soundtracks are. Just peel the title of the movie off his CDs and it makes the experience a lot better. That's the beautiful thing about Tyler. Despite the terrible projects he's been given, he throws down 100% for each score. Fortunately he's had better luck with decent TV series, scoring Star Trek: Enterprise, Transformers Prime and Hawaii Five-O.

I don't expect Battle: Los Angeles to change Brian's bad movie streak, but the music is quite impressive. He clearly comes from the Hans Zimmer school-o-scoring, but that's hardly something to complain about. Unlike Zimmer, however, he steps further out of electronic/D-minor-land and reveals some musical traits similar to Marco Beltrami and even Jerry Goldsmith. His use of the electric guitar is small and very subtle. It's similar to Zimmer's use of guitar in Inception. (I think it's much more effective here than Jablonsky's score for The Island.)

Brian knows how to make things action paced while keeping an underlying theme of emotional growth throughout. As a result, the Battle: Los Angeles motifs are pretty high on being inspirational-- without the cliches. For the runners reading this, the piece is 15 minutes long. I imagine long runs are pretty awesome while listening to this.
