Eliminating Your Heat Signature On A Thermal Scope.

Materials testing, thermal imaging, for educational purposes. This video is intended to demonstrate over the counter available materials and their effect on thermal imaging devices. Often, soldiers, police officers, security officers, federal agents, private detectives, preparedness minded individuals, airsofters, milsim reenactors, and even hunters can make use of thermal imaging, but have never seen how simple and readily available material can impact the effectiveness of such devices.

This materials testing demonstration helps lawful operators of such technology identify signature reducing materials in play and see how their use can impact imager operation. This is great for milsim and airsoft as thermals are becoming increasingly popular in such legally organized sporting events. It’s also great for police officers to be able to see how such materials may image on their camera in they run into criminals attempting evasion. As a former police officer, fugitive recovery agent, tactical trainer for American forces, and counterterrorism security contractor myself, I would have loved to have had this knowledge and to have seen videos like this while I was active. So I provide this service now to help everyone stay safe and raise awareness.

These videos can provide for greater knowledge and safety of thermal operators since criminals, cartels, etc., are known to deploy thermal blocking and counter surveillance techniques, yet our own people are never shown how field expedient blocking materials may image. And on a commercial and sporting level, military simulation, paintball, airsoft, etc., can use these materials test videos to enhance their sporting and gaming experience.

Testing environment: 39 degrees, mid-morning, with infrequent snow flurries, coming off a 27 degree night. Meaning, ANY heat is picked up incredibly easy.

Handmade suit utilizing a mixture of natural and synthetic fibers to break up the pattern of heat absorption and reflection sewn to desert tri color (hot weather) BDU base trousers, blouse and boonie hat.

See video suggestion card at end of video for more detail on how I built the suit, close up of it and it’s layering, etc.

Thermal blocking was achieved using common radiant barrier lining under vest and in sleeves, and by use of firefighting proximity gear under pants. The addition of a tanker cold weather balaclava reduced head/face signature in conjunction with tactical goggles. The gloves used were mechanix tactical gloves and they did not reduce thermal signature of hands at all. In all, the only thermal signature remaining was from my hands and breath on balaclava fabric. Nomex flight gloves or military cold weather glove inserts worn over existing gloves should solve the remaining problem with the hands.

Escape and evasion, reducing thermal signature. Thermal scope used was pulsar helion xp50 with 640 sensor, endorsed by police officers associations.
