Predator Vs Real life. Thermal scopes look at smeared mud on a body.

I smear a heavy clay mud coating on my upper torso, head, neck and arms, and film it with 80 sensor thermal scope, 384 sensor thermal scope and 640 sensor thermal monocular.

So… why?

This isn’t necessarily about replicating the filming of Predator to “fact check” it. What this is truly about, and the reason I’m doing it, is because people here, in the US, as well as occupants of other temperate region countries, refer to predator and say to just put mud on to hide from thermal. So the fact check is really about whether mud will hide you from thermal in temperate regions (not Guatemala or some other hot jungle, like in the movie).

The movie is just where these people got the idea from. If my goal was to fact check the movie, I’d fly to Guatemala and film the same thing in same conditions in same region and be done with it. But that’s not why I’m doing this. It’s not actually about the movie.

Most of my videos (in fact, the dominant majority) are less about fact checking (which would require perfect replication of an event or situation) and are more about myth busting (general approaches that are commonly believed but may not work when actually put to a test). Usually I make these videos on behalf of other people’s requests. And the myth being tested in this video is that, from Arizona to Minnesota, Calgary to Brussels, all you have to do, any time of year, is scoop mud and smear it on yourself and you disappear from thermal. THAT is the myth, the legend, the belief, the old wives tale, that the movie started. And that is what I’ve heard in comments here on my videos so much that I just delete the comment when I see it half the time or I would have dozens and dozens of repetitive comments in every video that say some facsimile of: “just smear mud, it makes you invisible, it worked for Arnold”

I hope that explains the actual purpose here better. I’m not fact checking the movie predator. Nor am I hung up about perfectly replicating the movie scene. Because that’s not the actual reason I am doing this. The movie is a motivating factor behind persistent legend and so I address it head on, but it’s the legend born out of it that and it’s application in conditions outside the jungles of Guatemala that is being tested here. And because there are so many people who truly believe this because of the movie, that’s why I’m replicating it fairly close to the movie.
