Dimitra Ketetzoudi sings a traditional dance song which is performed between October and Christmas as a mixed dance (men and women) in the square in Asvestades village in Evros. It is a “zonaradiko” dance song with 6/8 rhythm. The name of the dance refers to the woven belts (in Greek: “zonaria”). In the past, the dancers held wide belts while they danced. However, they sometimes just hold each other’s hands or shoulders. The song is about a young man who has been living in Constantinople (today: Istanbul) for twelve years. In Greek traditional poetry, the city of Istanbul was believed to be the world's first city, so it is just called “Poli”, “the City”. Even though the young man has good relationships with the locals, he has negative moments with a Jew and an Albanian, who do not permit him to visit his family in the countryside. Jews and Albanians were not only common citizens of Istanbul, but also represent traders and craftsmen, respectively, due to the fact that these were the main professions of their communities in Ottoman society.
