Funeral custom – Kalmyk Collection

Dordzhi Nandyshev narrates about funeral custom in Kalmykia

VLACH ID-number: kalm1244RUV0026a

Description:
Dordzhi Nandyshev explains the idiosyncrasies of the Kalmyk funeral tradition. When the Kalmyks were still nomadic people, they were "not allowed" to bother the earth by interring their dead in graveyards, instead leaving the body on the steppe to feed hungry animals and birds. In the present day, Kalmyks bury their dead underground and perform some Buddhist rituals during the funeral.
