Mersey Monoplane 1911

Robert Fenwick of South Shields built the unique Mersey Monoplane for the 1912 Military Aircraft Trials. The monoplane had a seven cylinder Isaacson radial engine at the front of the fuselage driving a pusher propeller at the back. This gave a clear field of fire forward from the cockpit and improved the balance of the aircraft by keeping the weight of the engine forward. The Mersey was the only aircraft to meet all of the requirements of the trials being able to fly for more than four hours at seventy five miles an hour and be dismantled and packed into a standard railway truck. Unfortunately while the design was sound and the aircraft had been proved by extensive testing at Freshfield Sands near Liverpool it was lightly constructed and the tail failed in gusty winds on the 13th August 1912 and the Mersey crashed killing Robert Fenwick. The Mersey carried a number of passengers from Freshfield including a number of adventurous ladies and Robert Fenwick's business partner W P Thompson who at the age of seventy was the oldest man to fly at the time.
