Project Estimation | Lines of Code - Engineering Numerical Example

In this video tutorial, you will learn how to identify the mode of development for the software estimation and learn to calculate the effort, development time, average staff size required for the software development, and its productivity as well.

COCOMO MODEL:

Let’s take a sample question from the internet. The question is as follow:

a) Using the COCOMO model identify the project type and calculate Effort (PM), Development Time and Number of Personnel Required for the following case-study, stating clearly the assumptions you have made (you may use appropriate data from the table given at the end of this QP for the calculations)

E-Commerce System for Nepalese Handicrafts.
Nepalese Handicrafts are quite popular in the international market. Nepalese Handicraft is a group of craftsmen who are looking to broaden the market of such handicrafts by launching an E-commerce system, a web-based system published online where people from all over the world can buy handicrafts. You are contracted to build this system but you haven’t done this kind of project before. You’ve estimated the LOC of this system to be 280 KLOC.

Here, the first step is to identify the project type means a mode of development (organic or semi-detached or embedded) and after identification, calculate the effort, development time, and the number of personnel required for the given software development using the same modes of development.
In question, we are given the size of software in lines of code which is 280 KLOC. So we can identify according to the size which lies in semi-detached modes of development.
 Now moving forward to calculation. We know the
BASIC MODEL EQUATIONS as
1. Effort = a (KLOC)b person – month
2. Development Time = c (Effort)d months
3. Number of personnel = Effort / Development Time  persons
Where a, b, c, and d are the constants whose values for the semi-detached mode of development are as follow
a=3.0, b=1.12,c=2.5, and d=0.35
Therefore, Semi-detached
Effort   = a (KLOC)b person – month
= 3 (280)1.12 person – month
= 1651.72 person – month
= 1652 person – month

Development Time    = c (Effort) d Months
            = 2.5 (1652) 0.35 Months
            = 33.438 Months
= 33 Months

Number of personnel = Effort / Development Time  persons
= 1652 / 33 Persons
= 50 persons
In this way we can identify the mode of development to estimate the software development required effort, Development Time, the number of personnel, productivity, etc. which will very helpful data for the decision making.
