Claiming "self-defense" in a battery case

When can you assert self-defense as a legal defense to a battery charge? In this video, a former prosecutor explains.

California law gives one an absolute right to use force to defense himself or others. However, the law also makes a distinction between a legitimate exercise of self-defense and what the law calls "mutual combat" (where the parties want to fight and both initiate the violence).

In this video, a former Los Angeles deputy district attorney -- now a criminal defense lawyer -- explains the law and the distinction.
