President Trump repeated his calls for Congress to approve $2,000 stimulus checks in a Christmas Day tweet, announcing he has been taking meetings over the holidays to secure a deal.
Trump wrote Friday afternoon, “Made many calls and had meetings at Trump International in Palm Beach, Florida. Why would politicians not want to give people $2000, rather than only $600? It wasn’t their fault, it was China. Give our people the money!”
He called for Congress to amend the legislation and increase stimulus checks from $600 to $2,000 while also cutting down on foreign aid and other stuffing in the regular appropriations bill.

The House is scheduled to vote on Monday for a stand-alone legislation for $2,000 stimulus checks.
Meanwhile, not all Republicans agree with the President’s demands.

Senator Roy Blunt, one of the top Republicans in the Senate, said it would be a mistake to not sign the relief bill and is predicting that the $2000 checks would not pass the GOP controlled Senate.

He said, “It took us a long time to get to where we are. I think reopening that bill would be a mistake.”

He continued: “The best way out of this is for the President to sign the bill, and I still hope that’s what he decides.”

The Washington Post reports that both Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell were “blindsided” by Trump’s condemnation.
Republicans have urged Trump to sign the legislation, with unemployment benefits set to expire today and a shutdown looming starting Tuesday unless the president signs the bill or Congress passes a new measure and the president signs it.
As the deadline nears for a government shutdown, we hope that something gets passed so that more people get help.
And finally, Sen. Lindsey Graham said Friday night after spending part of the day with President Trump that the president is “more determined than ever” to stick by his demand for bigger stimulus payments for Americans than those approved by Congress in a bill passed this week.
Graham tweeted, “After spending some time with the President today, I am convinced he is more determined than ever to increase stimulus payments to $2000 per person and challenge Section 230 big tech liability protection.”

He added, “Both are reasonable demands, and I hope Congress is listening.”

The president is staying at his nearby Mar-a-Lago resort for the holidays.

The $2.3 trillion government funding and relief package arrived at Mar-a-Lago this week.

It’s not clear whether Trump will veto the bill, but the delay could kick it into the next Congress and makes a government shutdown more likely.
