Nagorno-Karabakh conflict: Azerbaijan's army trains volunteers as US steps up diplomatic efforts

Azerbaijan's army trained reserves and volunteers on Friday to reinforce the front line at the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh, as more fighting against Armenia was reported despite attempts for a ceasefire.

The latest clashes in several parts of Nagorno-Karabakh came as the United States stepped up diplomatic efforts to try to end the deadliest fighting in the mountain enclave for over a quarter of a century.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met separately with the foreign ministers of Azerbaijan and Armenia in a new attempt to end nearly a month of bloodshed, in which Russian President Vladimir Putin said 5,000 people may have been killed so far.

The collapse of two Russia-brokered ceasefires has dimmed hopes of a quick end to the fighting that broke out on Sept. 27.
