Nagorno-Karabakh soldiers say they will stay on front lines until they win
A ceasefire in the mountain region of Nagorno-Karabakh was under severe strain on Tuesday after new clashes between Azerbaijan and ethnic Armenian forces in their deadliest fighting since the 1990s.
Footage released by the Defence Ministry of Azerbaijan showed what is said to be artillery bombarding positions of the Armenian Armed Forces as fighting between the two countries over the breakaway region continued.
Officials in Nagorno-Karabakh reported new artillery battles on Tuesday morning and said fighting was particularly intense in southern areas of the conflict zone.
Azerbaijan, which is a close ally of Turkey, says it has made territorial gains. But Armenia, which has a defence pact with Russia, says it has repulsed Azeri attacks and has the situation under control.
"We will win, and this will continue until we reach our point," Nagorno-Karabakh serviceman Vahrak Vartanyan told Reuters on Tuesday. "This is our home. And we will stay here, anyway.”
Several hundred people have been killed in the fighting, which each side blames on the other, and there are fears of a humanitarian crisis.
