Will government Brexit plans break international law?

Feargal Cochrane, professor of International Conflict Analysis, says the government is planning to introduce measures which would supersede the previous withdrawal agreement and thereby conflict with an international treaty.

Britain's chief Brexit negotiator David Frost says there needs to be "more realism" from Brussels about the UK's "status as an independent country".

This comes after news that a senior minister confirmed the plan to override elements of Boris Johnson’s Brexit deal with Brussels would breach international law.

The comment by Northern Ireland Secretary Brandon Lewis provoked a furious reaction, including from some Tory MPs, and followed news that the head of the Government Legal Department had resigned amid reports he was “very unhappy” with the proposal.
