Beethoven Symphony No 1 (1937) Weingartner/VPO

Ludwig van Beethoven
Symphony No 1 in C major, Op. 21

1. Adagio molto - Allegro can brio (0:07)
2. Andante cantabile con moto (7:00)
3. Menuetto. Allegro molto e vivace (13:20)
4. Finale. Adagio - Allegro molto e vivace (16:50)

Felix Weingartner, conductor
Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra

Recorded on October 19, 1937
at Mittler Konzerthausaal, Vienna

Beethoven's First Symphony is a fascinating start for the composer who probably did more to expand the symphonic horizon than any other. The work is a youthful one, with a first movement that seems almost like a homage to Mozart, and a second which could have easily popped out of a symphony by Haydn. In the third movement, however, the young Beethoven emerges with music that could only have come from him, a style that would continue to grow. And grow it certainly did into amazing music over the next quarter century of his life.

It is also worth mentioning that Weingartner's recording certainly ranks among the finest performances ever captured on record. This is, in our opinion, a truly wonderful interpretation of this score. Weingartner finds depths here that are seldom equaled.
