This story dates back to December of 2003 and saw The White Stripes leader Jack White get involved in a physical altercation with one of the members of The Von Bondies. What happened? Stay tuned for the full story.
Jack White has been credited with helping kickstart Detroit rock band The Von Bondies career beginning in 2001 when he produced their debut record Lack of Communication. In addition to that, he had the band open for the White Stripes on tour. And he also had The Von Bondies play on his compilation album showcasing garage and punk bands from Detroit titled Sympathetic Sounds of Detroit.
Fast forward to December of 2003. Both White and Von Bondies singer/guitarist Jason Stollsteimer were at the Detroit Magic Stick Club for a record release party for the alternative country band Blanche. By this point in time there were rumors that the relationship between White and the Von Bondies had soured. Some pointed to the fact that Stollsteimer had bad mouthed White in the press regarding his production role on the band’s first album telling Real Detroit Weekly in 2008
“What happened was I stood up for Jim Diamond of Ghetto Records, he produced Lack of Communication. I didn’t own a computer that had Photoshop. When the artwork got done for the album, Marcie Bolen was dating Jack White, and did it on his computer. He took it upon himself, from what I heard, to put himself as producer., I never noticed it until I did an interview in 2001 and they said, ‘What was it like having Jack White producing the record?’ And I was like, ‘What?’ Jack introduced us to Jim Diamond, he was there, but he didn’t help write or change anything on the production. The next day, I got a death threat on my door from him and I gave that to the cops. The next time he saw me, he beat the crap out of me" he'd remember.
Regarding that death threat Stollsteimer discussed in the interview, more information about it came out in a 2008 trial in which Jim Diamond sued the white stripes over royalties for the band’s first two albums . Stollsteimer explained the threat he received from White saying he saw a note stuck to his door with a knife in it that held up a magazine interview Stollsteimer did in which he criticzed White Stripes frontman. According to Stollsteimer, the note had the line “That’s the last … time I help you out.” written across it. White for his part laughed off the claim saying it was and i quote ‘laughable’ that he left the note.
So let’s get back to the events at the detroit club in 2003
According to Stollsteimer White wanted to speak to him at the club, but when the frontman refused, he claimed that White reacted angrily and threw Stollsteimer to the ground and punched him several times in the face Stollsteimer claimed to have suffered bruising to his right eye, a torn retina which required surgery and a bloody nose, while White supposedly had cuts to his left hand.
In court, White confessed that he had confronted Stollsteimer about negative statement the guitarist had made about him in the press. White would insist he fought back in self-defense after Stollsteimer threw him to the floor and began choking him.. After police completed a ten day investigation they asked Jack White to turn himself into the police which he did. He got his mug shot taken and was released on a $100 bond.
Three months after the incident Jack White initially pled not guilty to the charges of misdemeanor aggravated assault. If convicted White could have faced a fine of up to $1000 fine and a year in prison. Eventually the guitarist would reverse his plea and plead guilty so he could take a lesser charge. As part of his conviction he’d have to undergo anger management classes, pay a $500 fine and $200 in court costs. Upon completion of his anger management classes, he would no longer be on probation. And White was also told not to contact Stollsteimer. Stollsteimer for his part would not be charged with anything.
