I thought this was an interesting piece of news. So singer Seal would appear on Amoeba Records youtube channel for this segment what’s in my bag. If you guys haven’t seen the segment they have various musicians go around a record store and shop for some of their favourite bands and records. Around the 5 minute mark Seal shows off Alice in Chains Dirt and had the following to say bout the band
"Facelift was the first one, and it has 'Man in the Box'," adding that when he left America to go back home to England and it was during the time he came back to America he was in Los ANgeles and got into a conversation with a cab driver about music. The cab driver talked about how he was a fan of Nirvana and Pearl Jam both of which Seal was familiar with, but he didn’t know Alice in Chains. The cab driver played him Man in the box and he was sold. Seal would go on to say "I heard Layne [Staley]'s voice, Layne and Jerry [Cantrell] singing together with those close harmonies, and — yes," Seal recalled. "So, out of that whole grunge period, they were by far, by far my favorite, and I think the most underrated, Alice in Chains. There were some great songs on here, like the obvious one being 'Rooster, which Jerry wrote about his father coming home from Vietnam. I love the artistry obviously, but there’s real sexiness to their music, it’s dark it’s beautiful, it’s melancholy, but it’s really sexy and it’s weighty but they had but they had something that all those other bands from that grunge era that was something truly unique. They had a soul that was almost like an R&B soul. that, even though it didn't sound like R&B, but that guttural soul, as opposed to just kind of being in your head," \
Seal said as he held up a copy of the band's sophomore album Dirt. He explained that Alice in Chains are important to him because grunge was starting to take off in Seattle around the time that he left England, which is also when his own career was starting. He remembered having a conversation about the Seattle bands with a taxi driver in Los Angeles, who was the very first person to play "Man in the Box" for him. He'd already heard of Nirvana and Pearl Jam, but this was his first taste of Alice.
"I heard Layne [Staley]'s voice, Layne and Jerry [Cantrell] singing together with those close harmonies, and — yes," Seal recalled. "So, out of that whole grunge period, they were by far, by far my favorite, and I think the most underrated, Alice in Chains.
