In 1969 Led Zeppelin were on their first US tour to support their first album album. One of the concerts the band played was at a youth center in a suburb of washington DC.. At least that’s what some people claim. There’s no evidence the concert ever took place - despite some people claiming to have attended the show. Even the band’s own website listed the concert on their tour history page, while also claiming it’s an unconfirmed rumor. . There’s even been a documentary made about the mysterious show - - interviewing historians, journalists and music industry people. So what’s the story behind the whole thing? Let’s talk about it in today’s video.

On January 20th, 1969 Richard Nixon was sworn in as president and an inauguration party followed later that night. The Mormon Tabernacle Choir would sing for President Nixon. Meanwhile, approximately 11 miles to the north is Wheaton, Maryland, which is located Montgomery County, That night 55 people huddled up in a gymnasium that doubled as an events center to witness Led Zeppelin’s first ever concert in the washington area. While led zeppelin concerts in 1969 cost around $5.75 to attend, -according to the washington post, a ticket for the wheaton show was said to have been a dollar or two.

By this point in the band’s career, hardly anyone knew about the group, with them just having released their debut record one week prior. The show was supposedly organized by a local radio DJ Barry Richards who worked at the station WHMC. He would recall to the washington post "It's unbelievable," "And the fact that it was a Monday night, January 20th, the night of Richard Nixon's inauguration.": with him adding "They (referring to the band) weren't drawing the same crowd."

Richards would claim to the post that the gig was added last minute to the bands itinerary to fill an off night between shows in detroit and boston. That’s maybe why no posters for the show exist. As a result Richards didn’t have much time to promote the gig on his radio show. According to Richards, the band’s manager Peter Grant was angry about the lackluster turnout and blamed Richards for the poor attendance with him recalling to the post . "He was [angry]," Out in the parking lot, "he got in my face." Richards was scared Grant might beat him up so he gave the manager a $100 for gas money.
The wheaton youth center wasn’t a stranger to hosting musical acts - having previously hosted shows by The Faces, and the stooges to name a few. Several people claimed to have attended the show. The man who worked the door remembers apparently. As for why there’s no ticket stubs- it seems like admission was paid for at the door and attendees had their hands stamped. But Sharon Ward Ellis, the former director of the youth center, would tell the post "If Led Zeppelin was here, I don't remember," Youngwirth said.
Loudersound would profile one concert goer named Adrienne Ledford who attended the show, skipping out on her Christian Doctrine class - hitchiking in the cold winter nighht to make it to the youth hall. Another attendee claimed the band played a cover of the train kept a rollin.

Earlier in the month Led Zeppelin plaeyd three shows in LA at the whiskey a go go followed by four nights at the fillmore west in san francisco. The band then in the summer of 1969 headlined the laurel pop festival alongside jethro tull and edgar winter.

Local filmmaker Jeff Krulik who was behind the documentary heavy metal parking lot, actually shot a documentary about whether the wheaton gig took place - the documentary titled led zeppelin played here, which came out in 2013 was born by accident. The director was working on a documentary chronicling maryland’s version of woodstock ‘The Laurel Pop Festival’

He had heard about the story of the supposed gig and soon set out on doing a film about the concert . He would tell the washington post. "There's people who grew up in Wheaton, across the street, who went to every show, who don't remember it," The film wouldn’t see an official release since Krulik couldn’t secure the rights to led zeppelin’s music. But he would end up showing the film at numerous film festivals.

It just so happened a few days after the Wheaton gig, local rad
