Baby Seal Stabbed by Stingray

So this was a first for us at OCN..... Denzil and Naude came across this young female seal early on patrol at Pelican Point. They could see something on her neck, but it was clear that it was not an entanglement, and also clear that it did not belong there, so they decided to try and catch her.
She was high up the beach, so they could easily walk down below her, and comfortably grab her in the net.
This obtrusion must have been very painful, so instead of trying to manoeuvre her in the net, Naude decided to rather cut open the net to get the spike free. It was solidly embedded in her throat, but came out without too much effort.
After consulting with various marine mammal experts around the world, it was determined, as guessed, that this was a stingray barb. She must have caught the fish in the water, and while in her mouth, managed to stab her in the throat with it's spiked tail. It's usually not fatal after being removed, but can cause a big lesion that will stay for a long time. 🦭
