This video was recorded in the state of Louisiana in the United States by Nick Panzarella and features speakers Donna and Elizabeth. Tunica has no known native speakers and was considered extinct in 1948 when its last known native speaker died, however, there are reportedly 32 second-language speakers in existence. There has been an ongoing effort to revitalize the Tunica language since 2010 when the Tunica-Biloxi tribe, led by Donna and Elizabeth and in concert with Tulane University, created the Tunica Language Project. Tunica is considered a language isolate, meaning that it has no known relations to any other living language. Although not considered fully tonal, Tunica makes extensive use of pitch in prosody, resulting in highly musical delivery of speech and an elaborate relationship between tone and stress.
