Liszt - In festo transfigurationis Domini nostri Jesu Christi, S188 (Thomson)

One of Liszt's last overtly religious pieces originally conceived for piano, forecasting minimalism with its intimate and humble nature bordering on asceticism. Towards the end, both hands move to the treble clef as the music ascends to depict Jesus Christ's Transfiguration, ending in Liszt's beatific key of F-sharp major (it must be said that Liszt's choice of keys is frequently determined by a higher expressive purpose and is rarely the result of random selection; it cannot be an accident that so much of his "divine" music unfolds in the key of F-sharp major—consider the Bénédiction, the "Paradiso" section of the Dante Sonata, and Les jeux d'eaux à la Villa d'Este (this last work with its quotation from the Gospel of John).
