Reggiane Re.2005 Sagittario

The Reggiane Re.2005 Sagittario (English: Archer, Sagittarius) was an Italian monoplane fighter/fighter-bomber produced for the Regia Aeronautica during the later years of World War II. It is considered by many to be "the most beautiful plane of the Second World War". Along with the Macchi C.202/C.205 and Fiat G.55, the Reggiane Re.2005 was one of the three Serie 5 Italian fighters. The well balanced lines of the fuselage were aerodynamically perfect, and everything was designed to get the most out of the famous Daimler-Benz DB 605 engine (built by Fiat). The only drawback was a certain structural weakness in the rear section of the fuselage. Only 48 examples had been delivered before the Armistice with Italy (September 8, 1943), and these fighters took part in the defence of Naples, Rome and Sicily with the final survivors battling above the crumbling ruins of Berlin, with German insignia. Well-respected ace and military observer, Group Captain Duncan Smith, DSO DFC, stated: "The Re.2005 was altogether a superb, potent aeroplane."

Il Reggiane Re.2005 Sagittario era un caccia monomotore monoplano ad ala bassa prodotto dall'azienda italiana Officine Meccaniche Reggiane ed utilizzato principalmente dalla Regia Aeronautica durante gli ultimi anni della seconda guerra mondiale. Considerato da molti come "il più bell'aereo della guerra" era, insieme al Macchi M.C.205 e al Fiat G.55, uno dei tre caccia della "Serie 5", realizzata attorno all'eccellente motore tedesco Daimler-Benz DB 605. Venne portato in volo per la prima volta nel maggio del 1942. Soltanto 48 "Sagittario" vennero consegnati prima dell'Armistizio e furono utilizzati nella difesa di Napoli, della Sicilia e di Roma. Gli ultimi esemplari combatterono sulle rovine di Berlino negli ultimi giorni della guerra, sotto le insegne della Luftwaffe. " Il Re.2005 era nel complesso un superbo, potente aeroplano", sottolineava l'asso inglese Group Captain Duncan Smith, DSO DFC. La produzione su larga scala del Re.2005 non iniziò subito: vennero prima ordinati 16 esemplari di "serie 0", poi 18 esemplari di pre-serie e solo nell'aprile del 1943 vennero ordinati 750 esemplari di serie.
Queste ultime, tuttavia, rimasero tutte sulla carta.

Die Reggiane Re.2005 Sagittario (Schütze) war ein einsitziges Jagdflugzeug, das bei Reggiane in Italien gefertigt wurde und als Ganzmetall-Tiefdecker ausgelegt war. Zusammen mit der Macchi MC.205 und der Fiat G.55 zählte sie zur sogenannten „Serie 5". El Reggiane Re.2005 Sagittario ('Sagitario' en italiano), fue un caza monomotor de ala baja fabricado por la compañía italiana Reggiane durante principios de los años 40, y que participó en la Segunda Guerra Mundial con la Regia Aeronautica italiana, con la Aeronautica Nazionale Repubblicana de la República Social Italiana y la Luftwaffe alemana operó algunas unidades capturadas durante los últimos días de la guerra sobre los cielos de Berlín. El modelo consistía en una evolución del también caza Reggiane Re.2000,1 y a partir de él se comenzó a desarrollar el Reggiane Re.2006, del cual únicamente se construyó un prototipo.
