Italeri 1:72 Scale Fiat CR .42 Falco (Royal Hungarian Air Force)

Hello fellow scale modellers. In this video you will see my build of the Italeri 1:72 Scale Fiat CR. 42 Falco. The boxing of this kit used in this was the CR.42 LW (kit number:1276). However, I wasn’t overly fussed on the paint schemes for late war Luftwaffe CR.42s. So I ended up making custom Inkjet decals, and going for a Royal Hungarian Air Force paint scheme.

The model was made WAY BACK in 2016. But I haven’t gotten around to making a build video until now. So sadly (due to the age of the project), it is not as in depth of a build video I would usually make. So this video is a bit of a departure from my normal style. But thankfully I did take a few stills & some video footage of me assembly & painting the kit. So you can get a ruff idea of how the kit was made.

On an editor’s note, the footage of the Fiat CR.42 in action in this video are of Hungarian CR.42s crica 1939 to 1941. The model depicts a CR.42 circa 1942 to 1944. Normally I would include relevant footage, but sadly surviving footage of the Hungarian Air Force from WW2 is rare on the net (or even in archives).

THE FIAT CR.42 FALCO IN HUNGARIAN SERVICE
The Fiat CR.42 Falco (Falcon) was a single-seat sesquiplane fighter developed and produced by Italian aircraft manufacturer Fiat Aviazione. It served primarily in Italy's Regia Aeronautica both before and during the Second World War. Other operators included The Luftwaffe, Belgium, Sweden & Hungry.

The first foreign customer of the CR.42 was the Magyar Királyi Honvéd Légierö (MKHL - Royal Hungarian Air Force), which placed orders for 18 aircraft during the summer of 1938. Between 16 June and 20 November 1939, the CR.42s arrived in Hungary and began conversion from the Fiat CR.32. In November 1939, Hungary ordered an additional 50 CR.42s from Italy, which arrived between 10 February and 30 June 1940.

The first use of Hungarian Fiat CR 42s in combat took place against Yugoslavia, during the 1941 invasion by the Axis powers. Later in 1941 Hungarian CR.42s saw combat against the Soviet Union, often in ground attack missions. A few CR.42s served with a few fighter units in Hungary until 1942. The CR 42s of the MKHL were soon pulled out of front-line service and used as advanced trainers. There were plans to use a number of them as night fighters, but they were unsuitable for the role since they lacked radios.

In early 1944, a ground attack squadron was formed with the surviving CR.42s. Bomb racks were installed under the wings. But the squadron never saw active service during the Soviet Union’s invasion of Hungary. The majority of Hungary's CR.42s were lost in training accidents and strafing attacks by U.S. aircraft during 1944.
