It Is Truly Meet. This hymn is a glorification of the Most Holy Theotokos | Orthodox singers

In this video, a trio of Orthodox singers from Münster, Germany, perform one of the most famous and beloved hymns in the Orthodox world, "It Is Truly Meet." This hymn is a glorification of the Most Holy Theotokos, which expresses the Orthodox Christian faith that the Theotokos is the greatest of all creatures and that she is worthy of all praise and glorification.

The trio performs this hymn in the traditional Orthodox style, with beautiful melodies and harmonies. Their voices are pure and expressive, and they convey the full beauty and grandeur of this hymn.

This video was filmed at the Catholic Church of the Holy Cross in Münster, Germany, in 2023. The women of the trio have been singing for many years, and they first formed their trio in Münster on the occasion of this video.

The hymn "It Is Truly Meet" was written in the 14th century by St. Andrew of Crete. It is sung at every service in honor of the Theotokos.

This video will be of interest to anyone who is interested in Orthodox culture and music. It can also be a great gift for Orthodox Christians.

Ancient legend of the origin of the hymn

In the 9th century, the Theotokos was glorified with the hymn "More Honorable than the Cherubim," which was composed in the 8th century by Cosmas of Maium. In the late 10th century, a monk-novice from the Karyes Monastery on Mount Athos was performing the all-night vigil in his cell.

One night at midnight, there was a knock at the door of the cell. The novice opened the door and saw a stranger monk. He invited him in and together they began to pray.

When it was time to glorify the Theotokos, the novice sang "More Honorable than the Cherubim." The stranger stopped him and said that he had another, more beautiful and sublime glorification. He sang:

It is truly meet to bless thee, O Theotokos, ever-blessed and immaculate, and Mother of our God.

Then he added:

More honorable than the Cherubim and more glorious without compare than the Seraphim, without corruption thou didst bear God the Word, truly Theotokos, we magnify thee.

The novice was struck by the beauty of this song. He asked the stranger to write it down, but there was no paper or writing utensils at hand. The stranger said that he would write it down on stone and asked him to teach all Christians to glorify the Most Holy Theotokos. The stone under his hands became soft, and he carved the words of the song on it. Then he introduced himself as Archangel Gabriel and disappeared.

The icon in front of which this song was sung was transferred to the cathedral church of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos in Karyes and placed in the altar on the upper place, where it is located today. The plaque with the song inscribed on it was transferred to Constantinople during the patriarchate of Nicholas II Chrysoberges.

This legend suggests that the hymn "It Is Truly Meet" was brought to earth by God himself. It is an expression of the greatest love and gratitude to the Most Holy Theotokos.
