Transforming Hawai‘i Tourism - HIGHLIGHTS
Everyone agrees that our overtourism is overwhelming our resources. 10.5 million visitors in 2019 produced the same income for the state as 6.5 million did 10 years before. How to manage this?
Speakers:
Frank Haas i s President of Marketing Management, a consultancy focused on travel and tourism. He is the former Dean of Kapi‘olani Community College’s Hospitality programs and has held executive positions in higher education, tourism and hospitality, food service, and high tech. He served as Director of Marketing for the Hawai‘i Tourism Authority and is past national chair of the American Marketing Association.
Kalani Ka‘anā‘anā is the Chief Brand Officer of the Hawai‘i Tourism Authority (HTA), and is
responsible for overseeing HTA’s various initiatives outlined in its 2020-2025 Strategic Plan in the
areas of community empowerment, stewardship of the Hawaiian culture, preservation of natural
resources, and brand management. He joined HTA in 2016 and most recently served as its
director of Hawaiian cultural affairs and natural resources. Born and raised in Kailua on O‘ahu and
fluent in ‘Ōlelo Hawai‘i, Ka‘anā‘anā is involved in a multitude of community activities. He is one of
the 14 collaborative Native Hawaiian authors of the ‘Āina Aloha Economic Futures declaration and
is an active member of the Kailua Hawaiian Civic Club and a 2019 Omidyar Fellow. His ‘ohana
comes from Ka‘aihe‘e, Kailua, O‘ahu. An alumnus of Kailua High School, Ka‘anā‘anā graduated
with distinction from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, earning B.A. degrees in both Hawaiian
Language and Hawaiian Studies.
Pauline Sheldons is Professor Emerita, University of Hawai’i, School of Travel Industry Management. Her current research areas include regenerative and transformative tourism. She was the first woman President of the International Academy for the Study of Tourism, co-founded the Tourism Education Futures Initiative (TEFI), and is a Board Member of Hawai’i Green Growth.
