How Can We Rebuild the Economy? -- HIGHLIGHTS
Two University of Hawai'i economists, a State Senator and an activist discuss how we can recover from COVID-19 recession.

Sumner La Croix is Professor Emeritus in the University of Hawai‘i-Mānoa Department of Economics and a research fellow with the University of Hawai‘i Economic Research Organization (UHERO). His research focuses on the economic history of Hawai‘i and Australia, and institutional change and property rights in the Asia-Pacific region. He is on the editorial board of Journal of Economic History and is associate editor of Asian Economic Journal and Australian Economic History Review. He is the author of , Hawai‘i: Eight Hundred Years of Political and Economic Change (University of Chicago Press).
Beth Giesting is the director of the Hawai‘i Budget & Policy Center, which researches tax, budget, and other policy strategies related to expanding economic opportunity. Her interest in this area came from working for decades in health policy, since poor health is so strongly correlated with social and income disadvantages.
Laura Thielen was a Hawai'i State Senator 2012-2020, having served as Chair of the State Dept. of Land and Natural Resources 2007-2010. In 2020 she was appointed Parks & Recreation Director for the City & County of Honolulu.
Ikaika Hussey is a Local 5 political organizer. He’s leading a ten-year project to decarbonize long-haul aviation through direct atmospheric capture of carbon dioxide. He serves on the boards of a credit union, an independent school, and an arts center. He’s the president of the Domestic Violence Action Center.

Robert Perkinson is an associate professor of American Studies at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa and coordinator of the Better Tomorrow Speaker Series. He is a specialist in race relations, criminal justice, and social movements.
