Stanford Students Walk Out, Chant ‘Free Palestine’ As Google CEO Sundar Pichai Delivers Speech

Google CEO Sundar Pichai delivered the keynote address at Stanford University’s commencement ceremony, notably avoiding any discussion of artificial intelligence despite growing debates over AI’s impact on jobs and society. As Pichai took the stage, around 200 students walked out in protest, while others displayed Palestinian flags, banners and whistles before leaving the ceremony. Demonstrators criticised Google’s ties with the Israeli government, particularly its involvement in Project Nimbus, a cloud-computing agreement signed in 2021. Some students instead attended a separate “People’s Commencement,” which featured activist Mahmoud Khalil as the keynote speaker. After the protests subsided, Pichai’s speech, focused on his personal journey, career setbacks and successes, received applause and positive responses from many graduates and attendees.
