Hi, this is Scott with etrailer. Today we're taking a look at and installing our CURT class III hitch on our 2025 Jeep Compass. The Jeep Compass is a really versatile vehicle, and it's always nice to make it a little more versatile by adding a hitch on the back. This is gonna allow you to haul a bike rack around with some bikes on it, or a cargo carrier loaded down with some gear, or even pull a small trailer. One of the nice things about this hitch is it comes out enough where you can access it pretty easily, but it doesn't come out past the edge of your fascia where you're gonna run into it with your leg all the time. This hitch is gonna have a 5/8 pin hole opening.

That's gonna hold in any of your accessories that you put in the back. Now keep in mind, this won't come with a pin and clip, so you may want to pick one up. But a lot of your accessories now, like your bike racks and cargo carriers, will come with an anti-rattle pin. This hitch has heavy-duty, welded-on chain loops, so it's gonna accept either the S-style hook or the clevis. So if you plan on pulling a small trailer, that's gonna work out good for you.

As far as measurements go for this hitch, from the center of the pinhole out to the edge of our bumper, we're looking at right at around 4 1/2 inches. With that measurement, you'll be able to decide on any of your accessories that fold up or stow away will make any contact with the back of your Jeep. Now from the upper inside lip to the ground of our receiver, with that measurement, we're looking at right around 13 inches. That measurement will help you decide on what type of a ball mount you may need if you plan on pulling a small trailer, but it'll also help you figure out if you need any rise of the shank of either your bike racks or your cargo carriers for clearance. As far as weights go for this hitch, this hitch isn't rated for weight distribution, but it still has some pretty high numbers.

It's gonna have a tongue weight rating of 600 pounds. That's gonna be the weight of your bike rack loaded down with your bikes, or your cargo carrier loaded down with all of your gear. It's gonna have a gross trailer weight rating of 4,000 pounds. That's gonna be the weight of your trailer and everything that you have loaded on that. Now keep in mind, it's always a good idea to take a look in your owner's manual and make sure you're not exceeding any of your maximum towing capabilities listed in there.

We're gonna have two T30 Torx screws we're gonna need to remove. (drill whirring) (drill whirring) That's gonna give us a little room to get our hitch slid up in behind there. For our next step, I want to get our exhaust lowered down. So what I'm gonna use is a cam buckle strap, and I'm gonna support my exhaust with that. With that cam buckle strap, just want to pull that tight. That's gonna help me control my exhaust when I loosen that up. So now I'm gonna have two 13 millimeter bolts beside each exhaust hanger. (drill whirring) Go ahead and remove those on each side. (drill whirring) With those out, I can let down my cam buckle strap, and that'll lower down for us and give us some room. We're gonna need to get our heat shield down, and we're gonna have three 11 millimeter nuts that we're gonna need to remove. (drill whirring) And have two in the back. (drill whirring) And one even further back here. (drill whirring) With those out, we'll remove our shield. Now we have our heat shield down and we have it marked out, we're gonna need to trim this out. We're just basically gonna be cutting off these tabs where our exhaust hangers live. So you can use
