King of Hearts, the Musical (1978) Original Cast Recording, Side 2

This delightful buried treasure deserves to be dug up and revived, especially now when insane people seem to be running much of the planet. (Check your newspapers.) Based on the Philippe De Broca movie of 1966, this 1978 musical had two major blows against it.

Set during the end of World War I, it concerns a soldier who comes to a small French town to diffuse a bomb that the German occupiers have left behind. He soon discovers the inmates of the town's asylum have taken over the town and are considerably saner than the people running the war.

The movie was so popular because it was a metaphor for the raging Vietnam War. There was no major war in 1978 when the musical opened. That was the first blow! The show opened during a three-month newspaper strike in New York. Second blow! The show hobbled along for six previews and 48 performances before it perished from a complete lack of publicity.

The charming music and lyrics are by Peter Link and Jacob Brackman. The cast included Don Scardino and Millicent Martin, with Pamela Blair, Bob Gunton, Michael McCarty, and Gordon Weiss. Ron Field directed and choreographed it.
