ОЙ У ПОЛІ ДРЕВО
Ukrainian trad, arr. Jonathan Ploeg / Maryana Golovchenko
This is a traditional Cossack song from central Ukraine. In the traditions of the 19th century, it was important for someone to be baptised – if you were not, people would be suspicious of you and you wouldn’t be allowed to marry.
The periwinkle was a conventional metaphor for something that is beautiful. A zhupan (жупан in Ukrainian) was typical men’s clothing from the higher class.

JIP Chamber Choir is a project choir from Utrecht, the Netherlands, founded in 2013 by brothers Jonathan and Imre Ploeg. JIP wants to present new and unknown choir music from all over the world, brought together in surprising, engaging and fundamental themes like war and peace, the nomadic life, the refugee crisis and the ecological crisis.
