Hello everyone, this is Dr. Madhu Bagaria and today let's talk about a common post surgery surprise, which is a right shoulder pain. Have you ever wondered, like, while I have a surgery in my abdomen, why does my shoulder hurt? Well, this is because of the gas we use to blow up your abdomen, which can irritate your diaphragm, which is a muscle for breathing.
The phrenic nerve supplies both the diaphragm and your shoulder, so when this nerve is irritated, this can also irritate your shoulder area and it can ache. This can peak around 12 to 24 hours after surgery and can last for 2 to 3 days. So what can we do to help us have some symptom relief? Well, we can use ice or hot heat packs.
We can also use some lidocaine patches which can help relieve some of the symptoms and gentle movements. If your pain is severe and is not going away, then it's a time to consult a doctor.
