Trump launches federal investigation into 'left-wing civil unrest'

US President Donald Trump has announced a federal investigation into "left-wing civil" unrest occurring in several large cities across America.

President Trump says the investigation will be jointly conducted by the Department of Homeland Security and the Justice Department.

"Under my administration, federal law enforcement is working with state and local authorities all over the country to comb through hours of video, track down rioters, looters and arsonists and bring them to justice," President Trump said.

"We've just come up with a report that we've arrested a large number of people, it's over 200, and you'll be hearing about that. But they've been arrested in various cities throughout the United States."

The comments come as Black Lives Matter protesters and pro-Trump activists clashed in the industrial city of Portland, Oregon.

Protests, numbering between 100 to over one thousand, have been occurring in Portland for 94 consecutive nights.
