New storm forms in Bay of Bengal - November 16, 2023

A new tropical storm has formed today off the coast of Odisha, India. Indications have shown a fair circulation with gale force winds likely occurring, and a big bulk of convection on its northern side although partly sheared. The storm is expected to move northeast towards the Ganges River Delta in Bangladesh, and could become a strong tropical storm before weakening as it makes landfall in a couple of days. Strong winds and rainfall of up to 250mm are expected.

In the Philippine Sea, a poorly organised area of interest continues to persist near Yap, Micronesia, and is expected to remain ill defined as it reaches the Philippines later this week. The system is likely to perch over the region for several days, leading to major rainfall and flooding concerns. Rain of up to 800mm could fall in some parts of eastern Luzon, Catanduanes, Samar, and other nearby islands.

Further east, another area of interest is starting to take shape, but its currently unclear whether it will manage to form before it reaches Guam this weekend. This potential storm could become a typhoon next week in the Philippine Sea.

In the Caribbean Sea, the area of interest that has been tracked for many days now is finally starting to show signs of organisation or at least presence, and could become a brief tropical cyclone as it heads towards Jamaica and Haiti late this week into the weekend. Rainfall over the area will be elevated, which could lead to localised flooding.

Another area of interest could form in the Bay of Bengal this weekend into next week, and is currently forecasted to stall around for some time without hitting land.

Cyclone Mal turned post-tropical earlier today, after clearing the Fijian islands. Apart from some associated cloud cover over Tonga, any threat from this storm has now passed.
