The Biggest Mistake I Made As An Engineer, Producer, Mixer

It took me a long time to learn what that mixing needs to be personal. I'm a very by the books thinker... I'm a creative individual... But I'm always looking to build systems, and best practices to make everyday tasks work more efficiently. That definitely worked its way into my work. And It wasn't necessarily a good thing. See I would hunt for how certain engineer processed their sounds to get that amazing end result on my favorite records. I was looking for the HOW not the WHY.

Don't get me wrong its important to learn the rules and how to use certain tools... But once you know that you can go one of two ways. 1) Understand you know the tools at your disposal but not be limited by them. 2) Get blinded by the "supposed to" isms that plague our industry as a whole.

Once I shook that way of thinking I started to really make some of the best work I've made.
