A month spent cat-sitting in Melbourne | Housesitting in Australia for free

After doing the tiring but insanely fun Southeast Asia circuit, Australia was a really attractive but expensive thing to add to the trip. It's such an incredible place to visit. We spent one evening applying to housesitter listings on AussieHouseSitters, which Molly suggested and I didn't think would go anywhere. It seemed to good to be true, but the next day we had a callback from someone that ticked all our boxes: a nice place to stay, animals we love, near to public transport, and in a city we really wanted to explore anyway. Our time looking after 3 cats in a cute suburban house in Melbourne was the best time ever. We were able to stay in Aus for 6 weeks, 2 weeks paying for places to stay and 4 weeks for free, which made the trip even longer.

Housesitting is the best way to travel Australia on a budget. You can use supermarkets instead of restaurants, and have all your own space. You may miss out on the social side of hostel life, but for us we had that for months either side of this time housesitting so it was a nice break. We did lots of free things to do in Melbourne, like seeing Kangaroos in Melbourne, and penguins in Melbourne at St Kilda beach, and I enjoyed just walking around town taking photos.
