Seal Net BREAKS during rescue
While on patrol for Ocean Conservation Namibia (OCN), Antoine and Naude spotted a huge female they had missed during a seal rescue a few days before. To make sure they would not lose her again at Pelican Point, they drove to her with the car. She was already in the water, when they managed to catch her with their custom build seal catching net.
She was a very heavy girl, and Antoine and Naude had to drag the seal back from the water to be able to cut her free with their Leatherman tool. When pulling her out, the net slipped over the loop holding it in place, and the entangled seal was stuck inside, with no way of getting her out.
We heavy hearts, they had to cut their precious net to let her out. Luckily there were were some young tourists on the beach that gave the rescuers a helping hand.
Back in Walvis Bay, the OCN team managed to fix the seal net and it is back in use. The net has helped Ocean Conservation Namibia capture more than 200 seals by now, most of them would have found a horrible end.
The main issue remains: ocean pollution and discarded fishing lines and nets are everywhere, they are a good example of human careless actions impact animal welfare and climate change.
Side note - Naude and Antoine did not coordinate their t-shirts, they dressed the same by chance and the team had a good laugh about it.
