Look Up! The Best Meteor Shower of the Year Has Begun | Geminid Meteor Shower 2022 | Geminids 2022
It's December, and it's time to watch the best meteor shower of the year - the Geminid meteor shower. It is one of the three prominent meteor showers of the year, among Perseids and Quadrantids. They take place between Dec 6 -19 every year, peaking on Dec 13-14. Every meteor shower has a dedicated point in the sky called the radiant. All the meteors appear to originate from it. The radiant of Geminids lies in Gemini.
A meteor shower produces its best displays when its radiant is well up in the sky. The radiant of Geminids will reach the highest point in the sky by 2 am local time. You can start watching the shower a little before midnight to catch the earthgrazers.
Earthgrazers are long, slow, colorful meteors traveling horizontally to the sky.
You don't have to stare at Gemini. The meteors can appear anywhere in the sky. All of them will typically be moving away from the constellation of Gemini. The Geminids are particularly noted for their colors compared to the other meteor showers. 5% white, 26% yellow, and the remaining 9% are blue, red, and green. At its peak, it's possible to see up to 150 meteors per hour under ideal conditions. You don't need any telescope to watch the shower. Just find a dark place away from city lights.
