As Valentine's day is coming, here's a big heart for all of us, showing nature's love. This is IC 1805 or the heart nebula. Located in the constellation of Cassiopeia, the heart nebula is an emission nebula having a diameter of 330 light years. It is about 7200 light years away. This means even light takes 7200 years from the nebula to reach the Earth.

The heart nebula is a cradle of stars. New stars are taking birth in this cloud of dust and gas dominated by hydrogen and helium. Young O and B type stars emit copious amounts of ultra-violet radiation that ionize hydrogen atoms. When electrons fall back through the hydrogen atom's quantum states, they emit electromagnetic radiation (spectral lines). One of the most prominent spectral lines is the H-Alpha line at 656.28 nm, which lies at the spectrum's red end. Hence most of the emission nebulae are red in color.

The Heart Nebula was discovered by William Herschel on November 3, 1787.
