Hartmann learned to fly at his mother’s pilot school and by the age of 14, he became an instructor then. As Nazism seemingly rejuvenated Germany’s economy at the time, Hartmann became a member of the party and it was no surprise when he enlisted at the beginning of the war.
He received training from Germany’s best war pilots at the time and soon started doing flying missions. Hartmann developed his own fighting technique which included getting closer to the enemy so that they wouldn’t notice you until too late and would have no time to react.
Soon he was becoming infamous in the enemy lines and they nicknamed him “The Black Devil” after a painted black tulip on his airplane.
Hartmann received a medal from Adolf Hitler himself and continued to fight for Germany until the very end of the war. He was imprisoned for 10 years after which he became an officer in West Germany.
