In the year 1788, the Austrian and Ottoman empires tried to ascertain dominance over the Danube in the Balkans. They were supposed to meet up and have a battle in Karansebes, today’s Romania.

When the Austrian cavalry arrived to pick a camping spot, they encountered some wandering Romani people who sold them some schnapps. As they had time to waste, they started drinking.

The rest of the army joined up and asked the cavalry to share the drinks. They refused. After an alcohol-driven argument, soldiers of the same army started firing on one another.

The Austrian army at the time consisted of many different nationalities – Italians, Austrians, Hungarians, Serbians, and so on. They had difficulties understanding each other, and the chaos only made things worse.

Soldiers wrongly assumed that the Ottomans organized a surprise attack and they spent an entire night fighting each other. Estimates range from 1000 to 10,000 – that’s the number of soldiers who died to their comrades.

When the Ottomans arrived later on, they found a half-dead, half-deserted army who had no means of fighting back.
