Shoot Brand Timer Remote Problems... How to Fix & make Compatible with Canon (XXD) DSLR's

How to make a Generic Shoot Brand Digital Timer Remote Shutter Release Compatible with most Canon (XXD) DSLR's & extend the cable length all at the same time!!!

No matter what timer remote you buy (unless you buy the official $$$ Canon timer) there will always be a problem with the connector that plugs into the camera.

I knew when I bought this timer remote from Amazon that l would have compatibility problems with my Canon 20D & 7D DSLR's. And sure enough, when I plugged it in all the problems that you read about on the forum boards are true... doesn't fit tightly or is too tight, and never made a reliable connection.

You might also read or see vids of people removing the metal outer sleeve and cutting the little tabs and claiming it works... well, don't believe them cause it doesn't!

If you want a inexpensive, reliable timer remote then this is the way to go without spending a fortune!!!

*WARNING*
Following these instructions you may ruin the timer remote, remote switch and or the camera. Proceed at your own risk!!!

Tools you'll need for this procedure:

1 - Canon RS-80N3 (the official Canon one or you'll have the same problems as the cheap timer remote) Remote Switch - $39.99 B&H Photo

1 - Cheap timer remote. I bought mine (generic Shoot brand) from Amazon for $18 but any will work as long as it's compatible with the Canon (XXD) DSLR's.

2 - Male 1/8" TRS connectors (Radio Shack #274-274)

2 - Female 1/8" TRS connectors (Radio Shack #274-2084)

Solder (Radio Shack #64-0130)

Soldering Iron

Wire Strippers

Multi Meter

Shrink Tube (Optional)

Final Thoughts:
The reason I bought this timer remote was the simple fact that it took AAA batteries and it had the most positive feedback for reliability. It's a cheap $18 timer remote so I don't expect it to last like the Canon timer... but for $18 who cares! When the old one dies all I have to do now is solder a TRS connector onto the new Timer Remote and I'm back in business!
