A Canyon Discerned: A Foreigner's Work Experience at Grand Canyon

Concessionaires contracted by the National Park Service provide lodging, food and other guest-related services within America's many national parks. A high turnover rate among American employees working for these concessionaires means chronic labor shortages. Companies therefore rely on the foreign J-1 visa work program to staff some positions in retail, housekeeping, food and beverage. Although the J-1 visa program is designed to foster cultural understandings, college-aged participants from economically disadvantaged nations (Asia, Eastern Europe) often view the program as a golden opportunity. The idea of income and belief that working in America--even in low-skilled positions--will sharpen their resumes, are reasons that many will pay exorbitantly for the opportunity to go abroad. For many, however, the expense required to initially participate proves too challenging to make back by the end of the experience.
