Bumblebee 2 - Official Movie Trailer
Bumblebee took everyone by surprise in December 2018 as it became the best-reviewed entry of the Transformers franchise by some distance.

That hasn't quite translated into the big box-office numbers enjoyed by the earlier Transformers movies, but with more than $400 million worldwide to date, Paramount is pleased enough with the performance to be developing a sequel.

Bumblebee's success could lead to a big change for the Transformers universe with the studio said to be working on other spin-offs. That's instead of a Transformers 6, which was taken off the release schedule in February 2018.

But we're pleased to see they haven't forgotten about Bumblebee and here's everything you need to know about the sequel so far.

Bumblebee 2 release date: When can we expect it?
The first movie was filmed between July and November 2017 and was released just over a year later on December 21, 2018, so it's fair to say we can rule out 2020 for a release date for the sequel.

Looking ahead, Paramount has a release date slot for "Untitled Paramount/Hasbro Event Film" on October 1, 2021 which could be used to release Bumblebee 2, but only if the sequel starts filming this year.

Bumblebee 2 cast: Who can come back?
Depending on when exactly the sequel is set, there is a chance that we could see the return of Hailee Steinfeld as Charlie Watson and John Cena as Sector 7 agent Jack Burns.

The two main (human) stars certainly seem up for a return too, with Cena telling Cinema Blend that he would "hope so" when asked about a comeback, while Steinfeld believes Charlie is "still capable of so much".

"We see how much growth takes place in such a short period of time that by the end of the film, you know, even though she's overcome so much, I still feel she's got so much to say, a lot more to learn and a long way to go. So I would be interested in exploring that," she explained.

Other potential returns include Jorge Lendeborg Jr as Charlie's next door neighbour Memo, Pamela Adlon as Charlie's mother Sally Watson and Stephen Schneider as Charlie's stepfather Ron.

Dylan O'Brien did voice Bumblebee in the spin-off movie, but unless the sequel wants to diverge from Transformers continuity altogether, then don't expect him to return as Bumblebee doesn't have a voice (and "talks" through the radio instead).

Bumblebee 2 plot: How does the first film set it up?
The ending of Bumblebee doesn't immediately lend itself to a direct sequel with the same human characters as Bumblebee and Charlie have gone their separate ways.

It's opened up the possibility for a soft reboot of the franchise, though, as we saw Optimus Prime (voiced, as ever, by Peter Cullen) come to Earth in a "family reunion" with some other unknown Autobots.

The problem with this is that in the first Transformers movie, set in 2007, Bumblebee sends them a beacon as he's the only Autobot on Earth. So, either any future Bumblebee movies engineer a situation for them all to leave Earth again, or it can be seen as the start of a refreshed timeline for the series.

While director Travis Knight isn't guaranteed to return for a sequel, he can see how the story of his movie can continue. "In my mind, I wanted to make sure the movie was a standalone, but I imagined adventures to come," he told Digital Spy.

"You definitely could take those moments and branch off in different directions using that idea, like seeing a Gen One Jazz or a Gen One Optimus Prime and telling a different kind of story there. Just as a fan, I would love to see that."

Perhaps we'd even see the Gen One Megatron after Knight revealed that he cut a scene from Bumblebee that saw the Decepticon frozen in the Hoover Dam (in keeping with the Transformers timeline).

"People just didn't get it – people who weren't Transformers fans, they just didn't understand what was going on. So we had this awesome G1 Megatron frozen in the Hoover dam that, alas, didn't make the cut," he told Den of Geek.

Bumblebee 2 trailer: When will new footage land?
We'll have to wait until filming starts to give you a better idea of when to expect the trailer. It's a fair shout that it might be at Comic-Con of whatever year the movie will be released.
