True Love By Memphis Slim w Special Guest Lee Kanehira Guitar Lesson

On this trip to Japan, I got to play with Lee Kanehira, and we played this song at a show and during sound check. Lee's a fabulous blues piano player who's featured on my latest, "No Border Blues Japan" on Delmark records. She often works with The Cash Box Kings and she has a great career under her own name touring in Japan and China.
Memphis Slim's got so many great tunes. I always thought the instrumental version of "True Love" would be such a great break tune. It's an AABA form, which may be new to some of you guys. It just means there's two parts, and you do the first part twice, then a bridge, then go back to the first (A) part, before it starts over. For this one, each section is 8 bars, with a repeating 4 bar fade out and a 6 bar intro (you're on your own for the intro). Best of all, Matt Murphy LIGHTS IT UP as usual! I love the way he can be jazzy and sophisticated, but so downhome and gritty practically at the same time. I took a stab at his solo and talked about some of it.
