There's no doubt that basic, bread and butter chest pressing exercises should form the foundation of any good chest workout. But which is the very best horizontal pressing exercise available: barbell presses or dumbbell presses?
If you take a look at the mechanics of the barbell press vs. dumbbell press for stimulating chest hypertrophy, it's actually fairly obvious which one is the clear winner. Here are 3 reasons why the dumbbell press is superior and why the flat/incline/decline variations of this movement are the very best chest exercises for mass out there...
First, it lets you move your pecs through a larger range of motion. The primary function of the pecs is to bring your humerus across the front of your body (humeral adduction), and the dumbbell press lets you achieve this to a higher degree in comparison to the barbell press.
