Magnitude 7.4 earthquake strikes Vanuatu, devastating capital

A magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck the South Pacific island of Vanuatu on Tuesday, injuring several people and leaving at least six dead.

Though Vanuatu has seen its fair share of natural disasters over the years, this tremor in particular – which hit Vanuatu’s capital city, Port Vila – registered at a depth of 10 km, data from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reveals. In the initial aftermath, half a dozen aftershocks hit the city.

Dan McGarry, a journalist who has lived in Vanuatu for over two decades, called it “the most violent earthquake [he’s] experienced,” adding that his wife – a Port Vila native – echoed the sentiment.

Australia’s foreign minister, Penny Wong, extended her country’s “solidarity and condolences” to those impacted by the earthquake, further offering “whatever assistance is required” to the community.
