Trapped man left for dead after mate flees the scene of a car accident in Eastgardens

Residents were woken to the sounds of a loud smash in the early hours of this morning after a serious accident on Bunnerong Road in Eastgardens.

At around 2.30am residents contacted triple zero after a car collided at high speed into a traffic light.

It's understood a witness saw another male flee the wreck whilst leaving his mate trapped inside the car.

The damage to the vehicle was so significant that it took rescue crews an epic two hours and 6 minutes to free the driver.

NSW Police rescue said it was a long and complicated process of removing each piece bit by bit. They started work from the top of the vehicle and proceeded towards the drivers area.

Along with the passenger seat, most of the lower parts of the dashboard and lower console was removed.

The multiagency rescue required the resources of Paramedics, Intensive Care Paramedics, Special Operations Paramedics, Paramedic Commander, Fire & Rescue NSW, Police Rescue, local Police and RTA traffic management.

Paramedic crews worked hard to ensure the conscious male was stabilised and pain management was implemented. Once extracted he was transported to hospital for treatment of significant lower limb and pelvic injuries.

It's understood that the vehicle had been reported stolen.

The damaged traffic light will be replaced later today.

Investigators are appealing for anyone who witnessed the crash, and who hasn't already spoken to police, to come forward.

They particularly would like to speak to the man seen leaving the area in an attempt to establish the circumstances leading up to the incident.
