"You Are My Other Me: Migrant Voices and (In)Visibilities in the Work of Artist Arleene Correa Valencia" with Arleene Correa Valencia and Raquel Vega-Durán.

Born in Michoacán, Mexico, Arleene Correa Valencia is a visual artist living and working in both Napa and San Francisco, California. A recipient of DACA, she explores her status as a registered “illegal alien” through her art. Working with painting and textiles, Correa Valencia weaves a rich narrative of complex stories about migration, invisibility, fear, separation, representation, resilience, and pride. In this session–the Observatorio’s contribution to Harvard Worldwide Week 2021–she will discuss the interdisciplinary nature of her work from both a political and artistic perspective with Harvard professor Raquel Vega-Durán. The conversation will serve as an opportunity to meet and interact with this inspiring young artist and to learn more about her dynamic art projects.
Correa Valencia holds a BFA and an MFA from the California College of the Arts and has been a resident and fellow at prestigious art centers, such as the School of Visual Arts in New York. She has been featured in solo and group exhibitions throughout the US and has received several scholarships and recognitions, including an Emmy Award. Vega-Durán is Senior Lecturer in the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures and Chair of the Committee on Ethnicity, Migration and Rights at Harvard University. An expert on Migration and Border Studies and on Narratives of Identity, among other fields, she has researched migration in both America and Europe, most recently publishing Emigrant Dreams, Immigrant Borders (2016).

Arleene Correa Valencia es una artista visual nacida en Michoacán, México, que vive y trabaja entre Napa y San Francisco, California. Como beneficiaria del programa DACA, a través de su arte explora su estatus de “extranjera indocumentada” registrada. Con pintura y materiales textiles, Correa Valencia teje una rica narración de historias complejas sobre la migración, la invisibilidad, el miedo, la separación, la representación, la resiliencia y el orgullo. En esta sesión –contribución del Observatorio a la Harvard Worldwide Week 2021– la artista abordará el carácter interdisciplinario de su obra, tanto desde la perspectiva política como la artística, con la profesora Raquel Vega-Durán de Harvard University. La conversación brindará la oportunidad de dialogar con esta joven e inspiradora artista y de conocer mejor sus dinámicos proyectos de arte.
Correa Valencia cursó sus estudios de grado y de postgrado en el California College of the Arts y ha realizado estancias en prestigiosos centros de arte, como la School of Visual Arts de Nueva York. Ha participado en exposiciones tanto en grupo como en solitario en diversas zonas de EEUU y ha recibido varias becas y premios, incluyendo un Emmy Award. Vega-Durán es Senior Lecturer en el Department of Romance Languages and Literatures y Directora del Committee on Ethnicity, Migration and Rights de Harvard University.
