What is Cognitive Defusion in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy?

Cognitive Defusion is one of the six processes of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), which helps people by increasing psychological flexibility.

Cognitive Defusion skills target unhelpful thoughts such as rules that when followed rigidly worsen a person's well-being.

In this video, ACBS peer-reviewed ACT Trainer, Jim Lucas, answers the question: what is cognitive defusion?

By digging deeper into functional contextualism and the research on the five facets of mindfulness, Jim helps you understand what defusion is for, and why you do it.

While sharing some principles of contextual behavioral science, Jim also keeps it simple so you can get to grips with what defusion is not and what it looks like in practice.
