Belarus: Thousands of women protest in Minsk during "peace march"

Several thousands of women joined an unauthorised rally called Women peace march" on Saturday in Minsk to protest with the presidential election results.

Activists could be seen holding a red-white-red tricolour and "Pahonia" coat of arms, chanting: "Long live Belarus!", "You sold your nation!", "We do not need to be escorted!" and "Go away".

Protesters reached the Independence square where they were met by law enforcement agents, who prevented activists from moving further.

Belarus has been swept by anti-government protests following the disputed presidential election of August 9 that saw incumbent president Alexander Lukashenko re-elected for a sixth term. On August 19 the European Union announced sanctions against "a substantial number of individuals responsible for violence, repression, and election fraud" in Belarus.
